Maple Syrup Season in Norfolk

Sugaring season is in full swing in Norfolk County which means delicious, local maple syrup is filling the shelves! Sugar shacks across the county, and the country, are working to hard to produce the sweet syrup that we love so much in the few weeks when that magical sap is flowing from the wondrous Sugar Maple Trees.

Untitled design (24)

At one well known local maple sugar shack, Chambers Pure Maple Products, they are busy tapping trees, boiling sap and turning their tasty syrup in to a variety of maple products, including their famous maple syrup! You can purchase any of these sweet products at their eclectic gift shop, ‘The Maple Shop’, in Villa Nova. And chances are you’ll also be able to find their syrup at quite a few local stores, shops and restaurants.

For a taste test of their smooth golden brown syrup, you once could to stop in at The Pancake House. For 20 years the Chamber’s would spend the busy sugaring season creating their tasty syrup while serving piping hot pancakes smothered in pure maple syrup to awaiting customers. Serving a seasonally fresh and delicious breakfast, of course The Pancake House was a popular place for those eight busy weeks of the season. Two years ago the Pancake House was converted in to The Maple Shop bringing a change of pace to the sugar season for the Chamber’s family.

Don’t worry you can still sample their fresh syrup at a few local restaurants. Kerrys St James Street Eatery in Waterford is loading their flapjack and sausage breakfast with Chamber’s Maple Syrup. Or, visit the Crepe House in Port Dover to try it layered over a sweet or savoury crepe.

If you’re really looking to immerse yourself in the marvellous maple syrup tradition, then you must pay a visit to Richardson’s Farm & Market just west of Dunnville. Take a breathtaking tour through the sugar bush and experience the sap collection using both traditional and modern systems. Get a peak at the sap boiling and the syrup creation process.  And of course, enjoy some hot pancakes and sausage with some seriously fresh syrup.

Growing up, I remember tapping the maple trees around town and boiling the sap to make our very own maple syrup to load on our pancakes.  I’m no longer tapping trees, but I absolutely love a little local syrup as a tasty natural sweetener in my morning coffee.

So, my fellow Norfolk syrup lovers, what’s your favourite maple treat?

The Best Burgers of Norfolk County

Untitled design (7)

Admit it, you love burgers!  Well, so does the Erie’s Edge team. We truly can’t resist a mouth-watering patty topped with fried, fresh, or classic fixings.

Here are a few of our team’s favourite burger spots in our very own, Norfolk County (in no particular order)!

Fererra, Food With Attitude

Untitled design (24)Fererra’s didn’t set out to be known for their burgers, but based on the feedback from our original Burger blog post, they certainly have created some burger masterpieces. I’ll tease you with elements of the Erie’s Edge team’s favourite Ferrera burger, the Pacino! It’s made from VG meats lean ground chuck and this 9 oz patty is topped with house made “extreme” beans, sautéed red onion, banana peppers, cheddar cheese, bacon, arugula, and finally it is finished off with house made tangy BBQ sauce and house made chipotle drizzle served on their signature black buns. But they didn’t stop there, their other burgers are equally as tantalizing. The Big Sexy and The Black Betty are also dressed with house made sauces and originally prepared toppings. These in-demand burgers are proudly created with quality and care by the Ferrera team and they can’t wait to craft one up for you!

Sandbar On The Beach

Sandbar On The Beach is loading up their 100% prime rib patties with all kind’s of toppings, even Peanut butter! I certainly haven’t been br4ave enough to try the P.B. burger yet but I  have been loving the pickled peppers, beer battered jalapenos, and panko friend bacon topping options.  The favourite for one Erie’s Edge team member at Sandbar On The Beach is the French Cowboy Burger.  This burger is rocking some perfectly smoked Montreal brisket and crunchy onion rings. For the record, it’s not all deep fried and meat, meat, meat. The Turkey Point local restaurant also puts an awesome fresh take on their prime rib sandwiches with both the Beach Burger and the Campos Burger. All to be enjoyed with an awesome lakefront view.

211 Main

3Jalapeño Popper Burger, enough said! This “upscale but not uptight” gastropub in Port Dover really nailed it with this one, which was dubbed a favourite burger from an Erie’s Edge team member.  I’m sure you’ve guessed the mix of toppings on this hand made, locally raised, AAA patty; jalapeno’s, mozzarella and cream cheese. 211 Main seems to be really nailing their cheese game when it comes to burgers.  Aside from the popper burger, their menu boasts a double smoked maple bacon cheese burger, a blue haze burger featuring Dover Cheese Shop smoked blue cheese, and a black bean burger topped with goat cheese. Cheese please!

Uncle’s Country Coffee

I was told by another Erie’s Edge team member that a burger from Uncle’s Country Coffee was worth the title of a favourite.  Since this burger mention was located in Port Rowan, just a few minutes from our office, you can’t blame me for ordering one on my next lunch break. “Bacon Cheese Burger with all the fixings, please”. It was simple, but it sure was mighty! The perfectly proportioned typical toppings came stacked on a delicious juicy patty. I am now faced with the burden of resisting the Uncle Burger to curb my beef patty cravings on a regular basis. Thanks Uncle’s!

Willie’s

5If you ask almost anyone from Port Dover, including one of our Erie’s Edge team members, they will undoubtedly tell you that “Willie’s is the best”.  With a humble explanation of “it’s topped with peameal bacon, cheese and their famous homemade Willie’s sauce.” This quarter-pound charbroiled beef burger is equally popular with the summer-time tourists.  Worth a mention is the good vibe, beach side atmosphere that comes with enjoying a famous Willie’s burger in Port Dover!

David’s on Tour

1Another seasonal burger favourite for an Erie’s Edge team member is David’s on Tour located at Burning Kiln Winery.  Though I haven’t tried their burger myself, because I am shamefully addicted to their Walnut Crusted French Brie Chunks which I order at almost every visit, I’ve heard rave burger reviews! They switch it up with a new burger each week, so you never have to choose a single favourite. Ask your server to pair it with a glass of Burning Kiln wine, dine on the patio with a gorgeous view for a nice relaxing dinner. Meet you there?

The Combine

Famously serving… drum roll please… the award winning Combine Burger! Let me get right to it. This Simcoe restaurant is proudly serving fre2sh, locally sourced, home made dishes and they are doing it oh so well. It’s no surprise that their burger, featuring local Jensen’s aged cheddar cheese, was picked as a fave from one of our Erie’s Edge team members.  This beefy patty is also accompanied by smoked bacon, caramelized onions and the Combine’s very own home made grainy mustard mayo and ‘352’ smoked tomato ketchup. It still gets better. Visit The Combine on a Pattyshack Wednesday to get this burger for a great deal!

There you have it. The Erie’s Edge teams favourite Norfolk burgers. We know you have one too. So, what’s your favourite?

5(Norfolk)Things We’re Thankful for This Fall

5 (Norfolk) Things We're Thankful for this Fall

The leaves are changing colour, the air is getting crisp, harvest is in full swing for many crops. Autumn is my favourite season for so many reason’s.  Here are 5 of my favourite things about the Fall season in Norfolk County in no particular order (however I could probably list 30).

Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show

It’s pretty hard to sum up the Norfolk County Fair in a few sentences.  It’s more of a feeling, it’s hard to describe. You know that feeling you used to get when you first woke up Christmas morning before you saw the gifts under the tree?  Yeah, that’s the feeling! The Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show has just kicked off it’s 177th year, I can already smell the fair food and and hear the rides. It isn’t all about the rides, games and food either.  The agriculture and livestock buildings are just as exciting, there is such a sense of local pride. I couldn’t possibly explain it, go see for yourself!

Waterford Heritage Trail

We’re lucky to live in a County filled with an abundance of beautiful walking trails and outdoor spaces to enjoy. The Waterford Heritage Trail is a must-see in the fall, particularly at Black Bridge.  The bridge over looks the Waterford ponds and it is a stunning view when the leaves are changing in to their autumn colours.  You may spend more time stopped to enjoy the views and wildlife then hiking or biking but, either way, you’ll enjoy the experience. Make sure to add this to your to do list this fall.

Frank E’s Country Store

If you haven’t had a chance to visit Frank E’s in Vanessa, you must make the trip.  They are proud 3rd generation apple farmers producing quality products. I guess it’s obvious, you can stop by and pick up some farm fresh quality apples (in an abundance of varieties) and their incredible apple cider. But Frank E’s is more than a one stop shop.  Customer’s are raving about their mustards and other preserves.  You will also find mother-watering baked goods, soups and frozen entree’s. It gets better, depending on the time of year, they are serving delicious homemade breakfast and lunch. Not to mention how incredibly friendly and kind they are. Seriously, make sure you pay them a visit before their season ends to grab a bite to eat and to stock up on goods for the winter.

Waterford Pumpkinfest

No, Pumpkinfest is not a festival of pumpkins spice latte’s. Pumpkinfest is a classic Norfolk County festival celebrating the season and the community!  From the iconic towering pumpkin tower and the creepy Spookhouse, to the epic parade and the Friday night fireworks, Pumpkinfest is a perfect family fall event.  On the schedule this year is SUP racing, soapbox derby, live entertainment and carnival rides and games.  Of course, there is much more than that happening at this 4-day festival. Mark your calendar for Oct 12-15 this year!

The Apple Place (Apple Cider Donuts)

You may have enjoyed an apple cider donut before.  But if you have not had one from The Apple Place in Simcoe, then you’ve been missing out. If you’re stopping by my place this thanksgiving weekend then hold the bottle of wine and pie, I’ll take a box of freshly baked apple cider donuts please. While you’re at The Apple Place, check out all of the other goodies and treats they have to offer including apples, cider, honey, and other baked goods!

There you have it, five truly Norfolk things that I am thankful for this Fall! What are your favourite things about Norfolk County in the Fall?

Beer Cafe in Norfolk County | New Limburg Brewing Co.

It’s possible, I may become a regular at New Limburg Brewing Co. Tucked away in the village of Nixon right here in Norfolk County, New Limburg is brewing up some noble Belgian style beers.

Untitled design (67)

This summer we visited the microbrewery which is housed in a converted rural elementary school giving it the coolest nostalgic vibes.  The drinking fountains are in tact in the hallways and the class room chalk boards pose as the tasting room decor. Don’t worry, you won’t feel like you’re back in school! The tap room is set up like a European beer cafe creating a totally amazing atmosphere for tasting a few cold Belgian style ales.

Through the entrance we navigated the hallway past the retail area to the busy tasting room where tables and chairs were occupied by customer’s enjoying beers, food, and card games as well as the company. At the bar, with many menu options to choose from, we made our ale selections then passed up a seat in the tap room to enjoy some sun on the spacious outdoor patio. We were already in love with the authentic atmosphere and the genuine service so it was no surprise that we absolutely loved the beer.

To start, we sampled their flagship beer the Belgian Blonde. Refreshing citrus and spice with a smooth hop flavour, it is no wonder many local restaurants are serving this easy-drinking ale. Once we were out on the patio, we used the cleverly convenient bar service window to order our next rounds. We sipped on Petit Blonde and Wit. While we enjoyed them all, it was the light and fruity Wit that my taste buds fell in love with. I ordered a growler (a growler is typically a ceramic or glass jug which is used to fill and transport draught beer from local or microbreweries) of Wit to go!

Untitled design (72)

It is without a doubt that we will be retuning to the brewery, and not just for a growler fill up.  I am excited to try the Trappist beers as well as the limited editions. My fingers are crossed that the limited edition Hibiscus Wit will be available when I’m there.

Now, I have to take a moment and divert away form the ale talk because I just have to make mention of the phenomenal coffee that we sipped on! It is definitely a must try for an afternoon pick me up or, for a warm up if you plan to visit New Limburg this fall. We didn’t order any food on our visit however, a few other patrons were raving about their snacks.  In true Norfolk fashion, New Limburg’s menu showcases locally sourced items and we’ve heard the bread & homemade herb & spiced butter was mouth watering with every bite.

The authenticity of the family owned and operated Belgian style brewery is a true gift to Norfolk County.  The beers are rave worthy and the genuine atmosphere makes for unique rural experience. Hopefully we’ll see you there on our next visit, cheers!
