Today is the official start of the Norfolk County Fair and Horse show, a local tradition since 1840!
Being born and raised in Norfolk County the fair has been a tradition of mine for my entire life, 34 years! I don’t remember a year where I did not go to the fair.
In my elementary and high school years today was the best day of the year…FAIR DAY!! It’s real name is Young Canada Day and it’s a day for students to enjoy some school competitions. From cheerleading to tug of war, road races and grand stand decorating, the tradition and spirit of Young Canada Day is still alive and well.
There are so many great things about the Norfolk County Fair that I don’t even know where to start. But when I think of the fair the first thing that comes to mind is FOOD!! From award winning BBQ to deep fried everything there is lots for everyone. You could spend a day eating your way around the fair. There are onsite restaurants, flavour fest (a local farmers market) and of course many many food booths. The Food Network show “Carnival Eats” did a segment on the Norfolk County Fair last year, you can check it out here. The one thing that I cannot go without at the fair is my dixie dog from Bryan’s Dixie Dogs. For as long as I can remember this was what we all ate for lunch while watching the horse races. Their location is still the same and rarely am I able to get my dog without waiting in a long line up.
There’s also the rides. Lots of fun rides for all ages. Just this year I see they’ve brought back a crowd favourite, the zipper. Personally, I stick to the Ferris wheel, carousel or my favourite the scrambler!!
There is so much to see and do at the Norfolk County Fair. It’s hard to take it in all in one day. But as tradition will have it, I will get there this year for my dixie dog, hot apple cider, ride a few rides, play a few games, do a tour of the buildings to see the winning art work of students and artists alike, check out the chickens and ducks and bunnies, visit the cows, pigs and horses, admire the giant pumpkins, and check out flavour fest.
I can’t do it all but you may also want to check out the celebrity concerts including Dallas Smith and Coleman Hell, the demolition derby, the craft brew lounge, or a Taste of Norfolk featuring wine, beer and food from Norfolk County as well as live music including Felicia McMinn, The Practically Hip, Dry County and more!
